WELCOME

Welcome to my website.
Here's a guide to some of the different sections of the site:

Demos: This section contains audio clips from, and information about, the different groups I perform with. Also included are a few solo clips.

Compositions: This section is mainly audio clips of some of my musical compositions in different styles.

Articles: This section consists of educational material I've put together and may change from time to time, so be sure to check back occasionally if you find anything useful here.

Recordings: This section contains audio clips of commercially available recordings of mine and links to purchase them online.

Confessions of a Stupid Guitarist: Part one of this section is an essay I wrote in the summer of 1996 concerning my frustrations at the time with finding my own musical voice. Since posting this here, I've been amazed by the number of responses I've received from people who have grappled with the same problems. Surprisingly, just learning that the majority of other musicians struggle with these issues helped me resolve much of the angst I expressed in this essay.

Confessions Part 2 is 2004 update of my experiences with these same problems and includes some ideas and suggestions for developing one's own voice, dealing with stage fright, etc.

8-STRING PAGES

Here's a section for all of you with 8-string guitar questions like: "Why are the frets all crooked?" and "What exactly are you trying to compensate for with the extra strings?"

Mike's Master Classes

I now have classes available at the Mike's Master Classes website. Mike's Master Classes is a great online teaching resource for jazz guitar (as well as other instruments). Classes are in the form of videos that also contain written materials. It's like a one-on-one private lesson that you can view over and over at your leisure, and is a great value at $29.99 per class. Be sure and also check out some of the other classes available there from people like John Stowell, Steve Herberman, Paul Bollenback, Lorne Lofsky, Vic Juris, Sid Jacobs, Randy Johnston, Jack Wilkins, Sheryl Bailey, and many more great guitarists/teachers.

At the Mike's Master Classes site, you can browse through classes covering a wide range of subjects from beginning to advanced level, watch video previews of each class, and read about the teachers featured at the site.

In addition to my Jazz Guitar Harmony series, a five-part series which covers chords and chordal playing on the guitar from the ground up, I also have a new series available called Modern Jazz Guitar. This new five-part series covers all different facets of the modern jazz guitar style exemplified by such guitarists as Kurt Rosenwinkel, Ben Monder, Jonathan Kreisberg, John Stowell, Lage Lund, Gilad Hekselman, Adam Rogers, and many other exciting and innovative players on the modern jazz scene. Check out the Mike's Master Classes site for more details.

All of the play-along tracks used for demonstration of the examples in the modern jazz guitar series are available for free download on my Odds & Ends
page.
